Mini Putting – July 15

On July 15th I went to Mini Putting with our Summer Explorer Program. First, I with my friends and teacher got to that place. Afterwards, I made a group with my friends, then we play golf. Finally, I went to home stay and left the bus. As you can see, I had a very good time with my friends.

Byward Market – July 15

This afternoon (the first day), we visited an Ottawa market called the “Byward Market.” There we got a worksheet and we were to do something on the sheet, like finding how many kinds of “beavertails” are in the Beavertails’ store. That was so exciting.
In my opinion the most funny activity was to find the Beavertails. In the beginning, in my mind, a beaver tail is the fur of the beaver. So I was trying to find a shop which sells the fur of animals or beaver. But I didn’t see any store selling animal fur. I was angry and thought, “this mess is so terrible.” Suddenly I found a dessert store which was called “Beavertails.” Oh, I got it! And I now know a “beavertail” is a dessert! What a funny experience it was.

Cooking – July 11

Today we had cooking class as our afternoon activity. First, we went to the cooking studio by bus. The team of cooks were very nice and helped us all the time. As everybody of our group is just staying for little amount of time here, we cooked something typical for Canada: Poutine and for dessert cinnamon rolls.

Poutine:

Firstly, we cut some potatos with a special knife, so that we got some french fries. After that we mixed them with some oil and several spices. The cooks put them into the oven.

During the baking time, we started to prepare the cinnamon rolls.

Cinnamon rolls:

To start with, we had to put different ingredients like flour, milk and butter. So, we mixed it and got a dough. After that, we mixed sugar and cinnamon as well as some icing sugar with some cream cheese. Than we had to flatten our dough. Next, we put butter on it together with the cinnamon. Finally we rolled it and put these into the oven.

In the mean time, our french fries finished so we were able to eat. But the french fries alone are not Poutine. So we put some cheese and a sauce over it and it was ready. It tasted pretty good. We drank some coke with vanilla ice cream in it. Finally, we could eat the cinnamon rolls, but before we put the mixture of icing sugar and cream cheese on top of them. They were delicious.

Art Gallery – July 23

Today we went to the Art Gallery. It was a big art museum. It was big and beautiful. We went for two hours. There were so many pictures in the exhibition hall. The pictures were so beautiful. There were also some works of art in the museum. They were fancy, but we couldn’t take photos of them. Our teachers told us taking pictures is not good for the art. Some of the pictures were abstract paintings. We couldn’t understand them but we thought they were beautiful. There was a big sculpture outside. It was a big black spider. We had a great time!

Montreal – July 17

I arrived in Ottawa at the 10 of July. So I have been here for about 1 month. During this time I managed to do a lot of things. Honestly, this time passed very quickly because I went to the summer school on 440 Albert street. The program’s name is “Ottawa International Projects and Exchanges.”

With this program I saw many beautiful places. For example Montréal city, Saunder’s Farm, Upper Canada village, a lot of museums, and so on. But my favourite activity was the Montréal trip. Montreal is the oldest city in Canada. The first peoples who lived on this ground were  First Nations. This city has European architecture. French is the official language of the city and province. Montreal has the second largest population for a city in Canada.

Our group went to Montreal by bus. The first place witch we visited was the top of Mont Royale. Mont Royale has a beautiful view of Montreal. After, we went to the downtown area where the Eaton Centre is situated. Downtown- it is a really busy part of the city. In the Eaton Centre we went in the Grévin Wax Museum. There are a lot of statues of stars. My favourite statues in the wax museum are a statue of Gretzky and T. Hanks because they are the greatest. Wayne Gretzky is absolutely the best hockey player in history, and Tom Hanks is also one of the greatest actors ever because he has played in the best movies ever. For example “Forrest Gump” or “Green Mile.” At the end of the trip, we went to the Old Port. This place has a really unique atmosphere.

I really liked this trip, that’s why I want to say “Thank you” to the “Ottawa International Project And Exchanges.”

Upper Canada Village – July 31

On 31st of July I went to Upper Canada Village with our Summer Explorer Program. First, I got to there by school bus. Afterwards, I visited there and ate lunch. Finally, I went to the bus and came back. As you can see, I had a very good time with Frank and my classmates.

Kevin

Laser Quest – July 22

On July 22nd I went to Laser Quest with our Summer Explorer Program. First, I met my team. Afterwards, I tried to shoot with my gun. Finally, I lost the game. As you can see, I had a very good time with my friends.

Today we went to Laser Quest. Riding the bus took about 1 hour. There were a lot of video games. We chose our code names, mine was “Nohwa.” And then we played laser games. It was dark inside, so it was hard to get people. I teamed-up with my friend, but I betrayed him and “killed” him. In the first round I got first place. It was really fun.

Laser Quest – July 22

Today we went to Laser Quest. I thought it was cool because I really like this game. In China I often play Laser Quest. I made two new friends. We had fun shooting each other with lasers.

Hip Hop Dance – July 30

On July 30th I went to Hip Hop Dance with our Summer Explorer Program. First, I listened to the teacher about hip hop dance and did warm-up exercises. Afterwards, I spend an hour and a half to learn to dance. Finally, I played games with my teachers and classmates. As you can see, I had a very good time with my friends.

Almme (Caiying)

Today I had a hip hop dance workshop! Since I’ve been dancing for years, I was really looking forward to do this activity! And now that I’ve done it, I can only say it was one of the best afternoons ever! There was a hip hop teacher, whose name was Simon, who was having us do a bit of stretching, taught us a little hip hop choreography on a Justin Timberlake song. We repeated it several times from the beginning in order to memorize it. Afterwards, we did freestyle. That means we were all in a big group and one at time, we had to go inside the circle and do a movement that everybody was going to copy!
I had lots of fun with my friends; I’ll never forget that choreography!

Beatrice

Today we learned Hip Hop dance. I loved dancing and I was good at it. But this was my first time learning Hip Hop dance.
First of all, the teacher taught us some simple movements to find our rhythm. I thought that was easy for me. Then, the teacher began to play music. He let us put the dance moves into the music. Gradually, I learned all of the movements. When I danced, I felt very cool. I enjoyed dancing.

Betty (Qing)

Bowling – July 29

Today we went bowling. It was really fun but it’s a little difficult to get more points because we never practiced this. I still think this was fun. When you play 5 pin bowling, you will feel very good and nice. But, I didn’t like the bowling shoes because they were too smelly.

Frank (Haoke)

Movie Afternoon

Today everyone was so calm and bored because today we had to watch a film called “Groundhog Day”; everyone said that it was going to be really bad. We had lunch and I could feel how I was getting influenced by the others, and I was starting to dislike the movie without even watching it, WHY? Peer pressure, not the bad one. So the story began in a really boring way, and that made me understand why everyone was acting like that. As the movie went on, everyone started liking it. Okay the film, in case you don’t know, is about a man that lives the same day over and over and does incredible things, from killing himself, to be the nicest person ever. Finally, I loved the movie and I even recommended it to a lot of my friends. Apart from having fun, I want to say that it is better to try new things even if people act like they are not going to be good.

Laser Quest – July 26

Today I went to Laser Quest. First I took the bus to that place, and put on the equipment. Afterwards I fought with classmates and teachers. Finally I put the equipment back on the wall. Then we all went back to our home stays. I had a very good time with my friends.

Today we went to Laser Quest to play with laser guns. We had to wear a special vest and we had to shoot at the vests with our laser guns. We could see our points after the game. I came in third place in the first game, and came in seventh in the second one. After that my fingers were sore because I shot so much.

James (Jae Young)

On July 26th I went to Laser Quest with our Summer Explorer Program. First, I join my team. Afterwards, I went to play with the laser guns. Finally, I lost the game. As you can see, I had a very good time with friends

Escape Manor

Today for the afternoon activity we went to Escape Manor. Escape Manor is basically an apartment with several rooms and you can choose one to get locked in. Then you have 45 minutes to figure out how to get out. As we were an international group, we had 60 minutes to solve all the different puzzles. Furthermore, we had a live actress in our room who was possessed by a ghost. We had to solve all the puzzles to fill out the gaps in the spell to get her free. She helped us a bit by saying things that lead to the answers but she also tried to scare us. The room was dark but we had flash lights. Our topic was kind of mysterious because we had to use an Ouija board to solve one of the puzzles. Some of the puzzles were easy and some of them were difficult. We were so close to unlocking the room but in the end we would have needed two more minutes. All in all, we had a great time and a lot of fun.

Helena

Bowling – July 25

Today we went bowling. We took a bus from the school.

When we arrived, they gave us special shoes. Then they divided us into groups of five or six people, and we went to the bowling lanes.

Bowling in Canada is different. Canadian bowling uses a small ball (about 1.6 kilos) and five pins. There are no holes in the ball for your fingers! Canadian bowling was invented in 1909.

Canadian bowling is difficult but we had a fun afternoon.

Museum of History – July 25

Today in the afternoon, we went to the Museum of History. Our tour guide was really nice. She spoke very clearly; when we didn’t understand she used body language and onomatopoeias. I have never listened so carefully to a guide in a Chinese museum! We learned a lot! We had a good time there.

Beatrice

Saunders Farm – July 24

Saunders Farm was so funny!
It was an amusing all day activity. We could walk around in the farm and see whatever we want.
There were so many games!
Three different mazes: Spiral Cedar Maze, Spruce Maze and Cedar Maze.
Another funny game was the Pedal Cart: we could pedal a big or small cart!
I enjoyed so much this day with my friends!

Greta

On July 24th, I went to play at Saunders Farm with our Summer Explorer program. First I took a wagon ride. Afterwards, I ate lunch. Finally, I saw a performance. As you can see, I had a very good time with my brother.

Jason

Saunders Farm – July 24

The farm was big and beautiful. The air was fresh and sweet. The blue sky was a pleasant contrast to the green countryside. There were many mosquitoes and bugs, which I did not enjoy. But it is not hard to see that Canadians attach great importance to protecting the environment. The nice view made people relaxed. There were lots of games, for example Gravity Quartet. There were also many different kinds of mazes, swings and trampolines. My favourite was the trampoline. It was different from the others.  It was a semicircle that was inflated in the middle. A lot of people jumped on it happily. It felt amazing to jump freely on it. You could throw away all your worries. We laughed a lot.

Runqian (Rolly)

Saunders Farm – July 24

Today, I went to Saunders Farm with my friends and teachers. We took the school bus spend two hours to get there. At this farm there were many trees. It was good. We can see trampolines, mazes, observatory and so on. This farm that had so many children. They were cute. After lunch, we took a ride to see this farm. It was a great day.

Saunders Farm – July 24

Today I went to Saunders Farm. First I went into the maze. It was hard because I couldn’t come out. Afterwards, I took a rest in the chair. The sun was too strong. Finally I looked around the farm in a cultivator. I had a very good time with my friends.

Museum of History – July 23

Today we went to the history museum. It’s beside Ottawa river. The museum is big and clean. We learned more about Canada’s history. The exhibition here is delicate and very old. Around 3:00 we went back to school. What a fun day!

Today we went to the Museum of History. It was amazing! I learned a lot of information from it. The guided tour was very nice. The guide was so friendly. She taught us a lot of things we didn’t know. I could understand most of these things.
The guide told us about Canada’s Indigenous people’s history. It was really interesting! I remembered the place where we clapped our hands and walked across it. When we were at the middle of this place, the sound changed.
At last, we went to the “Canada History Hall.” I thought the Canada History Museum was really interesting. I liked learning history from it!
Today I was so excited!

Parliament Hill Scavenger Hunt – July 23

Today I went to Parliament Hill with our Summer Explorer Program. First I started a scavenger hunt. Afterwards I walked around parliament because we wanted to find things. Finally I finished the scavenger hunt and we went to the school. I had a good time at Parliament Hill.

Museum of History – July 23

Today, we went to Museum of History. Arriving at the museum, we put bags in the cabinet, and went upstairs. Then we met a guide. She told us many things about the museum and it was very interesting. The most interesting fact that she told was the tile of 1st floor. Some tiles were shining and some weren’t shining so that it could be seen like a sea. Before going to the museum, I thought that there would not have many contents. However, my thought was wrong. There were too many things to see all of them. That’s why I could not see everything in the museum. I think Canadian Museum of History is a very good place to understand Canada.

Today I went to the history museum. It seemed really big. I could see a lot of things about Canada like Canadian’s history, clothes. The most interesting thing  was that ceiling. It meant four seasons. I would like to visit that museum again.

Laser Quest – July 22

I went to Laser Quest. At first, I didn’t want to go to Laser Quest because I didn’t think the experience was unique to Canada as it could be done in Korea. We took a bus for about half an hour and arrived at the building. It takes 15 minutes to play one game. We played one individual game and one team game. It was a game where we got points after outsmarting someone by shooting a laser. The more I played, the more interesting it was. In the first individual match, I felt a little bit sad because I was in the top 50 percent of the total number. A few minutes later, the second game started, but in this game, my name was not registered correctly in the system and the game started without me. I played the game by myself because I was not on a team. People didn’t know I was on my own team, so I was able to get a lot of people out. Maybe that’s why my ranking was in the top 20%. I felt very good. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to play again after all the games were over. Contrary to my expectations, it was so fun.

Today we played Laser Quest. I’m not really good at active play, so I was worried. I didn’t understand the explanation because I don’t speak English well, but I enjoyed the game anyway. I have been playing Overwatch and Battleground, so when I got a gun, I felt like a soldier. I shot all the visible people. As a result, I came in second place. When my name was called, everyone went wild. I was really happy. If I have the chance, I’d like to play again.

Today after our lunch, we went to do the laser quest. Laser Quest was a place to do shooting game with laser. First, we played individually at the game. My nickname was Bang, as I like progamer “Bang”. Before entering the game, we listened to the rules we should follow. There was a vest with a sensor on our shoulder, back, and front, and a gun. And we had to shoot the sensor to get points. First game was for 15 minutes. I just walked around the square and died a lot. Luckily, next round was team game. There was three teams with color red, blue, purple ( pink ). Our teachers was in our team, so we played together. It was quite a short time to play but it was a wonderful time to play.

Canoeing – July 22

Today was a warm day. We went canoeing. It was exciting.  We took a small boat called a canoe. I was nervous because I am afraid of the water, but I believed in myself. Our canoe was faster than the other one. I was very happy. The coach praised me for my good rowing. We saw beautiful scenery. It was really nice. So beautiful! We took lots of photos. We were in a battle with the other canoe. Our canoe won because we worked together as a team. It was a great day!

Canoeing – July 19

On Friday, we went canoeing. It was very hot weather. We saw many old buildings. It was very interesting. We paddled a lot. I was very tired. And we sprinkled water to anther canoe. It was funny. I think I want to do canoeing one more time. It was very very hot weather. But it was funny. I look forward to another activity in Canada. I want to experience a lot of Canadian culture.

Museum of History – July 19

Today we went to the History museum. The walls of the museum are interesting. They’re made of rocks in which there are some bones! In the museum, we learned how people told a story and how people were long, long ago. We learned about the war in Canada, and how the British and French went to North America and made a country called “Canada.” I also saw some old guns and some pictures of letters from the war.
I learned a lot in the museum. I had a lot of fun.

Charles (Caizhe)

Art Gallery – July 19

We went to the National Art Gallery today. It was a great museum to me because they had a lot of different antique paintings which interested me. My expectations were very high before I went to the gallery. I was surprised to see that a lot of the art was modern. When I heard about the art gallery, I had hoped to see old, meaningful and impressive paintings, but some of them were not like this. Some of the paintings and statues were old (1450 – 1600), so I was still able to enjoy my trip to the gallery. My favourite painting was a little bit dark because the sun was behind the clouds and when the sun had risen out of the clouds, you could see the painting shine on the little lake and there was a great place where you can stay very quiet, alone, and relaxing. I wanted to go there when I saw the painting and the other one is interesting too because of its painting technique and method. You could see all the brush tracks; I was very impressed.

On Friday we went to the Art Gallery. I saw many famous oil paintings in there and many clay sculptures. It is a very big and senior building; there were many many doors. We went in at a door and then, we meet a door again. In a nutshell, the art gallery was very nice.

Cassie

Museum of Nature – July 18

We went to the Museum of Nature. The building was big and seemed very old.

On the first floor, there were fossils of dinosaurs and animals that lived a long time ago. Also, there were huge models of dinosaurs.
The second floor was about mammals. I learned about many different mammals. For example, baby cougars begin to eat meat caught by their mother at about six weeks. On the third floor, I learned about how the universe was created, how and why the earthquakes are caused, and I could see many minerals such as quartz, aquamarine, and opal etc. I liked this floor the most, because I am interested in the Earth, universe, and minerals. I also saw a huge moon model in the stairs from the third floor to the fourth floor. On the fourth floor, there was an exhibition about Antarctica and the North Pole. I saw the clothing worn by the people who
live in Antarctica and the North Pole.

I had a nice time at the Museum of Nature and I would recommend it to my friends if they come to Ottawa.

Cindy

In my English class, I cooked pancakes with my friends! I had cooked pancakes before when I was in Korea. Making pancakes was not that hard for me. It was delicious. But I think why the pancakes were delicious was because of the maple syrup. In the afternoon, I went to the Nature Museum. At the museum, I could see many natural-historical things. What surprised me most were the many kinds of insects. They were actually alive and moving. It scared me very much, but it was a good time for me.

Canoeing – July 23

Today, we went canoeing. This great activity was on the Ottawa River. For this activity, we used two canoes. It was very important that everybody paddle at the same time, because it makes it easier. In the canoe we went to a waterfall, called Rideau Falls. The Rideau Falls consist of two waterfalls, that flow from the Rideau River into the Ottawa River. Then we went back to school. It was a fantastic experience, and also a little bit exhausting.

Cooking Class – July 18

Today I had a special experience. We went to the supermarket to have a cooking class. First, we made poutine. The cook gave us some potatoes and we cut them. Then, we had to put some salt and seasoning to mix them with. Second, the cook gave us bowls to put some flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and cheese. We used a spoon to mix it. When the cinnamon rolls were ready we ate them with some sugar. Cooking class was quite interesting. I liked it.

Canoeing – July 18

Today, we went canoeing. I was so happy because it was my first time canoeing. First, we put on life jackets. Then, the teachers gave everyone a paddle. After that, we got in the canoe. The teacher told us: put one hand at the top and one hand on the side of the paddle. Next, we rowed in the canoe
together. ”One, two, go” the teacher said. We rowed quickly! We saw a big waterfall next to us. It looked like a big window. We took some pictures. We also saw a museum. This museum was very strange because the pillars looked just like the paddles. We rowed back and we were all very tired, but it was so interesting!

Day trip to Montreal – July 17

The trip to Montreal was so happy! I have heard Montreal is the biggest city in Quebec. We got on the bus and spent 2 hours on the road. The first stop was Mont Royale. We had a look of the city. Then we had a break in a shopping mall. Then was the most interesting part- the Grevin Wax Museum. We watched a short video in the dark. When go through the door, you will see the wax statues. There were many famous actors, super stars, presidents, etc. We took a lot of nice photos with the wax statues. Finally, we went downtown to spend our free time there. At half past four in the afternoon we left Montreal. What a tiring but amazing trip!

Day trip to Montreal – July 17

We went to Montreal on Wednesday. We first took a bus to get there. It was around 2 hours of travel. The first place that we went to in Montreal was Mount Royal. It was a great vantage point to see the city. After, we went to the Eaton shopping centre where we had lunch. In the same shopping centre, we went to the Grevin wax museum, where we went after lunch. In the wax museum, there were a lot of famous people like hockey players, musicians like Justin Bieber, actors like George Clooney and more people who were modelled out of wax. The wax figures were incredibly realistic. In one part of the museum, you can see how they make the wax sculptures too.
When we finished our tour of the museum, we went for a walk around the city. Our tour guide took us to one church that’s called the Notre-Dame Basílica. We finished our tour of Montreal here, and went back to the bus to go home.

Day trip to Montreal – July 17

Today was really tiring. We went to Montreal, which has the second largest population in Canada. Our first stop was Mont Royale. We went to the Eaton Center, it’s  downtown, and we went to Old Port, it has the Notre Dame Cathedral. The cathedral was very huge, and really nice to view. The Grevin Wax Museum gave me the deepest impression. When I got here, I had two friends I knew at that time. One is from Africa, she is Chinese, too. That made me feel excited. The other is a local, looks pretty, and she likes to learn history a lot. She is a really knowledgeable person. We saw many famous “people” here, like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and so many famous people in different times. One of my friends told me many stories about the people who we saw. I learned so much, and feel thankful for my friends. Whatever, the day was really tiring, but I still felt good. I wish I could see my friends and play with them again.

Day trip to Montreal – July 17

Today, I went to Montreal. It took 2 hours to get to Montreal from Ottawa. After 2 hours, we arrived at Montreal. First, we went to Mount Royal. The view from the mountain was so beautiful that I could see all of Montreal. Second, we went to the Eaton shopping mall. We went to the shopping mall and ate lunch at the food court. After, we went to the Grevin Wax museum. They made wax models of real people. It was fun, but it looked so real that it was little bit scary to me. In the last part of our outing, we walked around the city. It was really hot that day though, so I was really tired. When we came back to our school, I slept in the bus. The trip was very impressive.

Changing of the Guard – July 2019

This morning we went to Parliament Hill to watch the Changing of the Guards, a colourful display of pomp, pageantry and music. This ceremony takes place every morning during the summer at 10:00 a.m. sharp. It is quite impressive to hear the marching band and see all the guards in their red and black tunics and pants and sporting bear-skin hats. The bear-skin hats are very heavy and extremely hot. Due to the heat and humidity of the morning, one of the guards fainted. There was a medic on the grounds who was able to assist the guard as those around must remain in their positions and not move. The Ceremonial Guard is drawn from two regiments – the Governor General’s Foot Guards and the Canadian Grenadier Guards. Most of the Ceremonial Guardsmen are university and college students who are reservists in the Canadian Forces. After the ceremony was over, we went to Tim Horton’s (Timmie’s), a Canadian institution, where the students had an opportunity to practice their English language skills by ordering drinks and food. Bowling – July 16

On Tuesday, we went bowling. To get there we walked and took two buses and it took so much time that we didn’t have a lot of time to bowl. I think bowling is very hard. I think it’s a game of luck. We were divided into 6 teams; each team went to their bowling lane. We tried many times to get a strike, but it was difficult. All in all, it was a fun sport and I’m glad I got to try it.

Bowling – July 16

On Tuesday July 16th, we went bowling in the afternoon. To bowl, you need to throw the bowling ball, making it slide on the floor. The objective is to hit as many pins down as possible. The player with the most points by hitting down the pins, wins the game. One of the basic rules you need to know about bowling is that you have a second chance to to hit the pins if you miss the first time. However, if you get a strike (hit all pins down on the first try), then you can’t throw again. One thing I found interesting was that the bowling balls were smaller and they didn’t have 3 holes in the ball, so I found it harder to get a strike. Although the most important thing is that we had a lot of fun playing it!

Meritxell

Bowling – July 16

That kind of sport it’s so fun! but if you want to win you need to shoot down the most pins at the end of the place. Two days ago we went bowling. I wasn’t  the winner but I want to play this game again.

Isabella

Bowling – July 16

We went bowling today and it was fun. We played two rounds, and every round has 10 turns; in every turn, there are 3 shots to be made. In the first game, İ was first to play, but I missed. I didn’t know that we had another chance to shoot, so my sister, who shot after me, did not hit anything! My chance to get a spare was gone. In the end, I shared first place with my friend (115-115). İn the second round, i played for enjoyment and I wasn’t trying to be competitive. I still got second in that second game. I liked the place where were we were bowling. The bowling balls were very small. I haven’t seen bowling balls like this before. It was still really fun!

Çınar

The bowling activity was fun. It was kind of like a “mini-bowling”. It was different and new which made it fun to play.

Canoeing – July 15

On July 15th I went to canoeing with our Summer Explorer Program. First, I went to take a bus with my classmates and teacher. Afterwards, I went canoeing on river. Finally, I took photos with my classmates. As you can see, I had a very good time with my classmates and teachers.

Alice (Yuxuan)

I like boating very much because we learned teamwork while rowing. Everybody pulled together. You can also see the water scenery of Canada. I also saw Canada geese; they are very cute and lovely. The captain introduced us to the history of this while rowing.

Alice (Yuqiong)

Mini Putting – July 15

Today, we went to play golf (mini putt). The place was a little small and it was in a building. The place was a little dark but we could still see well. I learned how to play golf last Saturday so I thought I could play it well. But when I had a try, I found I can’t. I practiced for 10 minutes. Then I could play better than before. But later we had no time so we had to go back. I believe I can play well next time.
Then we went to play arcade games and we got many prizes! We were very happy!

Mike (Tianyi)

Byward Market – July 15

I went to the Byward Market. It was my first time to go to another country’s market, so I was very nervous. When I saw the big red letters spelling out ‘OTTAWA’, I was so excited. There were a lot of stores. My friends and I did a scavenger hunt. We had to search for the answers on the sheet. It was hard to do. Looking around, I saw a lot of maple syrup stands. Before going to the market, my classmates told me ‘You must buy the maple syrup’, but I didn’t bring my money, so I couldn’t buy any. There was an ice cream store with a lot of ice cream. It had 24 flavors. I wish we had more time.

I went to the Byward Market today. I had a hard time walking with my friends on a hot day with homework given by teachers, but it was so nice to be able to look around. I think many things were good to see in the Byward Market.

Today, I went to the Byward Market. I saw the Millennium Fountain, and I took a picture with the “Ottawa” sign. I went to the souvenir shops but I came out of the shops because the shop was very, very hot. And I observed the maple syrup with my friends. Suddenly the owner served maple syrup candies to us. We said “thank you.”
Actually, we couldn’t do many things because of the hot weather. So we said, “sorry…teacher.”

Hockey – July 15

That  kind of sport consist in put a ball in a hockey net; that would be a point. Also that sport it’s divided in 2 teams and the team with more points it’s the winner. Yesterday, we played hockey but our team was the loser; however, that was so fun because some of us didn’t know how to play that sport.

Isabella

Hockey – July 15

Today we played hockey which is a very popular sport in Canada. We played hockey in the school’s gym. Actually, we were supposed to go to the space simulator activity, but sadly, it was cancelled. In the first round, I just watched my friends while they were doing exercises and listening to the rules and tactics of playing hockey. I realized that hockey is risky even for the audience. We played with a plastic ball, but when someone hits it with some force behind it, it will turn into an even heavier ball. After the game, I searched something about this issue on the net. In real hockey games, they put a net in front of the audience.

Mini-Putting – July 12

Museum of Nature – July 12

We went to the Nature Museum. After we arrived, we followed the guide for a tour. First, we saw the wild animals found in Canada. The guide told us about the animals’ life, food, and how they are now in Canada. Every animal has different skills to live in the wild.
And here were also ocean animals. We saw the blue whale and other animals like jellyfish. But here has a serious problem with people polluting the ocean. Because the oceans have a lot of animals so it can bear more pollution. But there is too much pollution in the ocean so the ocean’s food chains start to break down. For example, the turtle eats jellyfish but the plastic bag looks like a jellyfish. So then it makes lots of turtles die off from eating the plastic bag, and jellyfish become more and more, making other animal habitats become smaller and smaller. So we should try to protect our environment more.

Chenny (ZuoCheng)

Cooking Class – July 12

The cooking class was fun and interesting because they taught us how to make poutine. That is fries with cheese and meat sauce, this recipe was my favourite. I tried it my first time in Canada because in Colombia there is no poutine. The other  recipe was a cinnamon roll; it was very delicious. It is a dessert of cinnamon. I like this activity because was my first time that  I made poutine and cinnamon rolls.

Sofia

Museum of History – July 12

Today we went to the History museum. The walls of the museum are interesting. They’re made of rocks in which there are some bones in them!

Museum of History – July 12

So, the Museum of History, even though you are not very keen on history, you will find it interesting because you’ll discover more about Canada, its past and how people used to live in ancient times.
I recommend it for sure! After having had a look inside, you can also take some marvelous pictures outside the building, as the structure of it is really wonderful, too!
We spent such a great time there!

Beatrice

Mini-Putting – July 12

Today I went Mini-Putting. I picked up the golf ball and stick from the counter. Afterwards, I practiced the ball with two volunteer little brothers. Finally I ate ice cream and got on the bus back to school. I had a good time with everyone in Canada.

Lucy (Shuohan)

Liu

Today I went to a museum which was about Canada’s history. This was my most favourite activity. We first went into the Great Hall. The building is like a boat and the ground is like water. It showed us how the ancient Canadians lived. Then we went to the Indigenous people’s hall. We saw many things that have ancient history. We went to the third floor and saw the history in Canada after 1914. Starting from World War I, through World War II, the Cold War, to the present day. I enjoyed World War I and World War II’s exhibit the most. Such a good history museum!

Fred (Hao)

Cooking – July 11

Today we had a cooking lesson. We took the 87 bus to a large supermarket. The cooking school was on the second floor. We washed our hands and then we started cooking. First, the chef gave us some potatoes. Then, the chef asked us to cut the potatoes into small pieces and then she put them in the oven to bake. After that, another chef taught us how to make Beavertails. We got a bowl where we mixed milk, butter, eggs, flour and sugar. Then we fried it to make a Beavertail. I had a lot of fun.

Laser Quest – July 11

Laser games are cool. I like it because it’s very exciting. But I’m not good at it because I was beaten in almost two minutes, and I rarely play this kind of game. I think this game is more suitable for boys but some girls like it too. This game is mainly about shooting laser spots on us with a laser gun. So the game is good, cool and interesting. I like it but it’s a little hot inside.

Shuoxan (Ella)

We went to play “Laser Quest” today. It was a really exciting game, I think. Everybody got a laser gun and we fought in a dark room. The first round was an individual round, and I got the second place. The second round was a team round. There were two teams, blue and red. I was one of the blue team, but we lost in the final game. That was really a pity. Whatever, I won the “MVP” in the whole game. I was a little bit proud of myself. After that, we went back to school, and a thunderstorm was coming. Because of that, we couldn’t go to the Rideau Centre, but that’s okay. We are going to go to the Rideau Centre today. That’s all!

Gary (Funan)

Parc Omega – July 10

On July 10 I went to Parc Omega with my friends and classmates. We took a bus for a long time. In the park, we saw a lot of animals. They are all very friendly and lovely. There were plenty of deer. They would run to the bus and wait until we gave them a carrot. There were also lots of interesting animals and I liked the bears the best because they stand up and use their hands to say hello to us. Then they would get a piece of meat. I liked the day in Parc Omega. I am looking forward to having another trip like that. It was so fun.

Cai

Parc Omega – July 10

On Wednesday, July 10 th I went with my friend to Parc Omega. We took the bus to go to Parc Omega first. At Parc Omega, we are still staying on the bus. That makes me feel amazing! I have never seen this way of watching animals. First, we saw a group of deer. There are many types of deer here. Then, we each took a carrot to feed them. At first I was scared to feed
them. But my friend told me not to be afraid of them. They are very friendly and finally I have the courage to try to feed them. This is a big growth for me. We continued to drive ahead. We saw a lot of animals.
Then we went to buy some souvenirs. I liked this activity. It was fun.

Liao

Byward Market – July 10

I went to Byward Market. It was great, I looked at lots of buildings and I went to Parliament Hill. I saw a lot of designs. The buildings were under repair so they were very noisy. Then I went to a museum. It was great. And I went to a store to buy ice-cream. It was a nice day.

Feng

Parc Omega – July 10

Parc Omega is very beautiful and big with a lot of different types of animals and plants. You can drive around the park and feed animals. They followed us because we had carrots. There were a lot of Canadian and non-Canadian animals there.
João

Museum of Nature – July 10

Today we went to the nature museum. It was very impressive because they explained things about animals and the planet. The part that I liked the most was the dinosaurs were awesome and very big. My favorite dinosaur is triceratops.

Calypso – July 10

Today was a great day for me, I loved to enjoy the unique experience. I rode  all the attractions such as: Vertigo. It was great to feel the adrenaline but the most important thing for me, was that I was able to overcome some of my fears and enjoy all attractions from the most extreme to the most normal. I liked it so much and would love to go back. It was great.

Daniela

Calypso – July 10

Today, we went to Calypso park. This is a water park that has lots of slides, a wave pool, some boats, and other things. This was an all day activity because this park is about one hour away from school. For me this has been the best activity so far because you can have fun with your friends and the slides are so exciting. In general, this park is very interesting and exciting, and people can come with their families or friends to have a good time.

José

Parc Omega – July 10

Today we went to Parc Omega. We saw many animals. There are deer, bears and wolves and we also fed carrots to deer. We also took the suspension bridge inside and we had lunch with the deer. Sometimes, some deer came to us to see if we have any radishes. At the end we went to buy some souvenirs such as plush toys and some decorations. I think the Parc Omega is very interesting.

Parc Omega – July 10

I went to Parc Omega. I went there by bus. I saw many Canadian animals. They’re cute, large, and strong. They were wolves, coyotes, black bears, caribou, white-tailed deer, elk, fox, and geese. I liked the wolves best. They were grey and white. They were beautiful. They live in a hole for wolves. I took a lot of photos of them. I bought a flask in the gift shop. It was a bit expensive, but I like it very much. I also liked my lunch because the hot dog was very delicious.

We had a bus tour today with our guide. He was kind and he knows Canada well. We visited a lot of places and they are all beautiful. First, we visited three buildings (on Parliament Hill). One of them was not open. Then we visited a river. There were some boats in it. Next, we went to a museum (the Museum of History). It was very old. Finally, we went to a park (at Rideau Hall). We had a great day.

Biking – July 9

When we went biking, I thought that we are going to have bad bikes, but they were actually really good. We had fun. We went near the lake, and it was so beautiful. Also, I was able to make new friends thanks to our shared joy in riding bikes. Generally, it was really fun, and I hope one day to do it again.

Byward Market – July 9

Today we went to the Byward Market! We took the bus in the afternoon to go to a shopping centre, and we walked to the Byward Market. We ate at Beavertails and drank a cup of bubble tea! It was very delicious! We did a scavenger hunt and saw the Millennium Fountain. In the Byward Market, there were lots of restaurants and many kinds of food, such as Japanese, Chinese, and Canadian. And very delicious ice cream! We tasted some maple syrup. It was delicious! There were souvenir stores that sold lots of things! My friends Amy and I bought some maple sugar and a piece of maple candy for our family! I was very happy! What a happy day!

Anne

Today I went to the Byward Market. I saw many different stores. York Street is a one-way street. I bought lots of Canadian memorabilia. There was many kinds of tea. I had lots of fun with my friends.

Biking – July 9

Today we went for a bike ride.  The bike path was on the bank of a river where there were boats and others.  The bicycles were in a cellar.  Then we went for two hours of cycling admiring the landscape.

Diégo

Today we had gone for a bike ride. It was a good experience, but I wished we had been allowed to ride fast. I wished I could have used my bike from back home too.  We rode our bikes around the Ottawa river for 2 hours, and it was really rewarding. There was very beautiful scenery. I like biking, but the bikes could have been better.  I also think our breaks were too long. I wished we had spent more time biking.  Despite that, I did enjoy the trip still. It was good to ride again because my bike is in Turkey and I haven’t gone biking for an entire month. In Ottawa, there are bike roads in everywhere so you can go almost anywhere with a bike. If I have some free time, I’d like to bike around Ottawa.

Çınar

Biking – July 9

For me riding a bicycle was great, I liked this activity a lot since I like to practice sports and outdoor things but preferably sports since they are one of my favorite hobbies and I like to exercise also missed it a lot. This activity was very good for me…

Laser Quest – July 8

Yesterday we went to the Laser Quest. At Laser Quest you shoot your enemies and get the maximum possible points. You can be a team or alone. Points are obtained by hitting the chest, shoulders, gun and back. It was a very fun and very entertaining activity.

This activity was very short for me and I have liked to have been chosen by the groups.

Laia

Byward Market – July 8

We went to the Byward Market today. The market is very large. There are lots of restaurants, shops, and old buildings. We did a scavenger hunt in the market. We walked around the market to find the answers on
the paper. That made us very tired. There were questions about the totem pole, the Millennium Fountain, and buildings like that. There were also many questions about special foods, which were sold in the Byward Market. There’s a question about Quebec’s and Ontario’s licence plate. Most of the cars in Ottawa use Ontario’s so that was easy. But it’s difficult to find cars using Quebec’s. Some of the questions were really difficult so we didn’t find out all the answers, but we still had a lot of fun.

Nemo (Botian)

Bus Tour – July 8

Today we went on a city bus tour. First we went to Parliament Hill. I think Parliament Hill is very beautiful. Then we went to a museum. Everything was very ancient. I felt very excited. Third we went to a park. I think the park was beautiful too.

Laser Quest – July 8

The 8th July 2019 we went to the Laser Quest. It was far away so we needed to take the bus. I was quite excited because it was my first time. We arrived early so we waited about 20 minutes. When we finally entered the room, it was dark but not too much because of the neon lights. I discovered I made a great mistake. My white t-shirt glowed in the dark so I was easily seen from the distance. The first game was quite difficult for me. I didn’t know what to do or where to move. The second game was better because I knew better where I was moving and where to shoot. So this game is now one of my favorites.

Teresa

On Monday, the 8th of July, we went to go play laser tag. In this activity, you have a laser pistol and a chest plate. Your goal is to shoot the enemies in one of four zones: chest plate, back plate, shoulders, or the gun itself.
We played two times. The first time, it was a free for all (no one is on your side, every man for himself). The second time, it was a team battle. The team battle had three teams: blue, red, and purple. I was on the purple team, so i had to shoot the red and blue team. To conclude, this activity has been my favourite since coming to Ottawa.

Aurelien

Today we went to the laser quest  where we did two things. The first one, we were alone and then with another team.  We had about 15 minutes for me the parties which was a little too short  since we did not have enough time left so we did not have enough time to  enjoy.
During both games I had a lot of fun and I had a good score fourth and seventh!

Laser Quest – July 8

Today, some of the summer school students, among that me, went to laser quest; it is like a “war” between everyone, but with laser guns. First, we played individually, in a dark and neon place, it was really fun; we were ranked and I won the 25th place, the first place was a teacher. After that first round, I played air hockey with Çinar, but I can’t remember who won. Then, we were called for going inside the game area, but this time we weren’t playing individually; this time was in teams, three teams, the red, the blue and the purple one. I was in the blue one, I had so much fun, I ran a lot, I shot a lot and at the end my team won!

Museum of History – July 5

At the Museum of History, we learned about Canada. I was surprised to find out more about Canada’s independence and how the immigrants and women, at that time, didn’t have any rights. The museum was a great experience because I learned about another culture.

Museum of History – July 5

Today, Friday the 5th, 2019 I went to the Museum of History in Quebec. Outside was quite hot so entering inside was a good idea. The first impression of this building was quite good. I remembered that place because we went there while doing the city bus tour. It really looked interesting.

We were divided in two groups once we left the backpacks in lockers (don’t really know why). The guide was called Teresa (just like me 😃) and we started on the ground floor. As we all walked through the expositions, the guide explained to us the past of this beautiful country. If you really like history, you should visit this because it’s an amazing place. Totems looked imposing, that faces of both animals and humans, judging you with that wooden look just in front of old, very well-conserved houses. A sculpture I liked specially symbolized the work in-group. They have their battles but no one betrays his or her partners. Lately, that visit was held on upstairs, in the third stage.

We just have time for the C part, contemporary history. We enjoyed interesting facts about the wars and human rights. Sincerely, I found more interesting the first part of the visit. But the visit was worth a lot.

Teresa

On Friday, the 5th of July, we visited the Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec. We took a bus which drove over a bridge leading to the other side of the Ottawa River that is between Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec.

The Museum was designed by a Métis. Around the building there are columns in the shape of paddles. The paddles are pointed up to the sky which is the symbol of peace. Further, the ceiling is shaped like a canoe.

We had a tour guide who showed us many places in the museum. We learned much about Canadian history. In the first section, we saw different totem poles and art of Indigenous People. In the second section, we learned more about Canada’s modern history e.g. that Quebec nearly became independent from Canada. There were two referendums; in the second one the vote was 51% to stay in Canada and 49% to leave Canada.

At the end, we got some free time, which some of us used to go to a part of the museum about Neanderthals. There we were shown several tools that
Neanderthals built themselves.

When the time was over, we took the bus again and drove back to OCENET. All in all, it was a very interesting visit and it was very exciting.

Lorenzo

Museum of History – July 5

It is also the most popular and most visited of all Canadian museums. It is located on the North bank of the Ottawa River, directly opposite the buildings of Parliament Hill, which  was erected in Ottawa, its main objective is to collect, study, preserve and presente the material of Canadá and the Cultural diversity of its population.

Bus Tour – July 2

Today, all my friends and some new people from other countries, like Spain, went on a bus tour with the school. When the bus took off, the guide started to talk about Ottawa and Canada. The first stop was Parliament Hill which is one of the most touristic spots in Ottawa. The Hill is where the prime minister works! After going to parliament, we went to the history museum and saw totem poles. We also talked about the architecture of the museum. The guide told us that the museum’s ceiling has the shape of a canoe. When the trip came to an end, we returned to school, so we could go back home. It was a cool and interesting day!

Sofia

Parc Omega – June 27

We had a nice class in the morning. We played some fun games that told us things about the animals we were going to see. The next day, then we got on the bus, then we got off the bus to buy some provisions and food to give the animals that walked in the park. Later, we saw many animals, then we went back to school and we went home.

Canoeing – July 4

Yesterday, we went to the river to go canoeing with everyone from the school. It was really hot but since we were on the water, we just splashed water at one another to cool do.  We were so tired when we finished, but we had a great time.

Pol

Canoeing – July 4

The boating was a spectacular experience. I could appreciate the beauty of the falls; also, I was in a canoe for the first time and paddling for the first time in my life. It was a nice experience but the bad thing was that yesterday it was a very hot day but I still liked my new experience…….because I like to do new things like extreme sports….to be continued..

Daniela

Canoeing – July 4

Today, we went canoeing. This great activity was on the Ottawa River. For this activity, we used two canoes. It was very important that everybody paddle at the same time because it makes it easier. In the canoe we went to a waterfall, called Rideau Falls. The Rideau Falls consists of two waterfalls that flow from the Rideau River into the Ottawa River. Then we went back to school. It was a fantastic experience, and also a little bit exhausting.

José

Byward Market – July 3

First, we took the bus and went to the market where we found an Ottawa monument and a fountain. After, we took pictures and we ended up doing a scavenger hunt competition but we could not get all the questions. When we finished, they gave us free time and went we to see stores. I bought myself a football.

Byward Market – July 3

Wednesday the 3rd of July, we went to the Byward Market.
To get to Byward Market, we went through the Rideau Centre. Byward Market is an amazing place with around 250 shops !!!
When we arrived at Byward Market, we were tasked with a scavenger hunt. We had to find different places throughout the market and then mark it on a sheet of paper. My group finished in last place : (  We were able to answer two questions the other groups could not answer though! After we finished the scavenger hunt, we had free time and went to the Rideau Centre, so that we could shop around. During our free time, I only bought two donuts: a chocolate one and a regular one. They were delicious!

After that, I returned to my host family.

Mud Oven – July 3

Today we went to a place where they taught us to paint pottery in which each of the students chose a figure and the colors that we were going to use. We all started to paint and the lady of the pottery gave us instructions to be able to fit our sculpture. We all started to paint the first layer then we took it to the dryer so that it was dry for the second layer. This procedure did retouching and then finally we marked our pottery and handed it to the lady who put it in the oven so that it would be fine and then we came back to school. They told us that they would give us back our ceramics when they came out of the oven and cool.

I liked today because we learned new things that we did not know and it was a very nice experience because it was something you could do by yourself.

Catalina

Mud Oven – July 3

Today, we went to the Mud Oven. Mud Oven is a place where people go to paint different kinds of pottery. They had a wide variety of colours to use. When we went there, we chose the kind of pottery we wanted to paint and began to work on it right away. When we were finished, the pottery was placed into a furnace. I painted a dog and I used brown, pink, and black colours to paint my dog. The Mud Oven wasn’t just for us, there were lots of Canadians there too. I think lots of Canadians visit Mud Oven so that they can make pottery. At first, it was a little hard to get around, but I got used to it after a while. It was a new experience for me. It was fun and I loved doing this new activity.

Bus Tour – July 2

Today we had a bus tour, and I signed up to write about it, so here I am writing about the bus tour. After eating lunch, we went on the bus tour. The bus tour was very interesting because I learned a lot of new interesting things. The first stop was at Parliament Hill. We had a tour around the parliament, and our guide told us the history behind it. He even told us that parliament is undergoing renovations! The reconstruction of the House of Commons is going to take approximately 10 years which is such a long time. The second stop was at History museum. We learned that the building is made of limestone, which is very very old. Inside the history museum, our guide told us about tribes which lived in Canada before Canadian settlers. We learned about totem poles too. After the second stop, we went back to school, and that was the end of the tour. I really enjoyed this activity!

Bus Tour – July 2

It was the first day of us being here in Canada, and we had just started to make friends. The bus trip was so interesting because we went to the parliament and the teacher explained what is done in parliament and its history. After, we went to go see a river; the surrounding landscape was so beautiful. This trip was so interesting and fun. I love Canada!

Mini-Putting – June 28

This was a fun day because it was my first time mini putting. After class, we went mini putting. The place we played at was very cool. It was illuminated by a lot of neon colors. They also had a lot of bright arcade games. It seemed as if we were in another world. We played in groups of 4. It was lots of fun to mini putt with my friends. I really liked this place and I would love to go again.

Parc Omega – June 27

Parc Omega is a beautiful place with a lot of animals. It’s a big place with a stunning view.

People can drive and feed animals with carrots. There are Canadian animals and non-Canadian animals too.

You can find a lot of totem poles, lakes, and you can walk on many different trails.

Archery Games – June 25

We had a morning class with our teachers Devi and Julian, then we ate our lunch and went to archery where we played 3 or 4 rounds. Our team won in the last round. When we were done, we went home, and I talked to my friends and played some videogames. When I got tired, I went to sleep.

Archery Games – June 25

Today, we went to an archery game. This game was similar to paintball, but instead of balls we use arrows. These arrows had rubber on the point.

This game is played by two teams of about 20 people, and you need to hit other guys that are on the other side. When you were hit, you had to go out. You can save (bring back a player that was hit) someone if you hit the targets.

In conclusion, it was a really fun game, and you run a lot. I recommend this game for teenagers and also parents because they will have fun.

This afternoon was great, because we got to play the archery game. I loved this game. I didn’t get hit and the game took about two hours. I think last part is the best because I enjoyed very much.

In this game, two teams are fighting each other and if you get hit, you have to leave the game. There are ways to revive your teammates. There are some barricades and walls in here, so you can hide.

In the last part of game, I had so much fun because there were some new rules. There were less barricades  than before and you were allowed to change teams.

I really loved this game.

Byward Market – June 24

We went to the Byward Market and we did a lot of activities. We made groups and my team won the activity of the day: the scavenger hunt.

We visited the millennial fountain. We took some photos. I ate something with oreos. We also listened to some guys playing guitar in the street.

After, we just took the bus and went home.

Byward Market – June 24

Today, I went to Ottawa’s Byward Market. There are lots of Canadian products and there were a lot of places to eat. The day’s activity was to find some stores and various landmarks in the Byward Market. Byward Market is where a lot of tourists come to visit when in Canada. In Byward Market, there are plenty of Canadians. Thanks to the activity, we were able to learn a lot about Byward Market, so I liked today’s activity.
